Client of the Month- Plymouth Discount Golf

Why We Picked Them

Most shops make their money persuading you to spend more. This one makes its money charging you less.

Plymouth Discount Golf sits in Unit 13 at Sugar Mill Business Park on Billacombe Road in Plymstock. It sells used golf equipment, buys it back again, and lets anyone who walks in test a club for free before deciding whether to pay for it. Lower cost. More options. Save money. Those are the shop’s own words for what it offers, and they are an unusual set of promises for a retailer to lead with.

Promises like that are cheap to make. What caught our attention is where this shop keeps them: in the moments when nobody would ever have known if it hadn’t.

What’s in the Shop

Quality used and second-hand golf clubs, sold as full sets and as individual clubs. Bags, clothing and accessories from top brands. Balls on a pick and mix basis. Tees, gloves, head covers, the small things that get lost and need replacing.

The counter works in both directions. They buy used gear for cash, and they pay you better again if you’re putting your old clubs towards an upgrade rather than simply walking away with the money.

Every club on those racks still has plenty of golf left in it.

The Room That Invites You to Leave

Golf equipment is usually bought on hope. You read about a club, you look at a photograph, you hand over a serious amount of money, and only afterwards do you find out whether it was ever going to suit you. Plenty of golfers carry one expensive mistake in the bag because of it.

Plymouth Discount Golf runs it the other way round. The testing bay is there, in the shop’s own words, to take the guesswork out and give you the data you need. There’s a golf sim as well. None of it costs anything to use.

Consider what that room is for. It occupies floor space. It takes up staff time. And its entire function is to let a customer find out, before paying, that a club is wrong for them. It exists to stop sales happening.

The shop offers it free anyway, then puts a seven-day exchange behind it in case the course tells you something the bay didn’t. Golfers notice. Being able to try before buying is one of the things they bring up most often when they recommend the place.

The Moment Nobody Would Have Known

Then there is the other counter, the one where people sell.

Think about who walks up to it. Someone who has stopped playing. Someone clearing out a set that has been in the garage for years, who has no idea what it’s worth, nothing to compare an offer against, no plans to come back, and no particular interest in golf any more. There is no leverage on their side of that counter at all. A shop could offer them half of what the clubs are worth and they would accept it, thank the staff, and drive home none the wiser.

Those are the people who come away describing Plymouth Discount Golf as honest, and the price paid as fair. They had no way of checking and no reason to return, and they went out of their way afterwards to recommend the shop to other people.

That is not a marketing claim. It cannot be bought, and it only gets earned in private, one transaction at a time, by a business choosing to do the right thing when the customer would never have found out either way.

He Left Without the Club He Came For

One recorded visit says more than any advertising ever could.

A man came in looking for a driver. He tried what the shop had. None of it suited him. He bought a bag instead, went home without the thing he had come for, and rated the visit excellent.

Nobody talked him into a driver. Nobody sent him away with a club that would have sat wrong in his hands for the next three years. He left with less than he intended to spend and more respect for the shop than when he arrived.

Any business can be generous once. Doing it as a matter of course, on an ordinary afternoon, with a customer who would never have known the difference, is something else.

Nothing Thrown Away

One line sits quietly among the shop’s reasons to choose them: eco friendly.

It carries more weight than it looks. Every set sold there is a set that didn’t go to landfill, and a set that nobody needed to manufacture. Every trade-in over that counter is two good outcomes in one transaction. Somebody clears out equipment they had finished with. Somebody else gets clubs they can actually afford to own.

Clubs that could have spent the next decade in the dark are back out on Devon courses instead, being used for what they were built for.

Why It Matters

Golf is an expensive game to walk into, and the cost of equipment is a large part of why people decide it isn’t for them.

A shop like this one lowers that barrier every single day, quietly, for anyone who finds their way to Billacombe Road. It does it without a national chain behind it and without anyone paid to shout about it. The only reason most people hear about the place is that someone else told them.

Which is exactly why we wanted to tell a few more.
